The Elms History

First known as the County Poor Farm in 1856, it became the Almshouse in 1884 in Scotland Township. It has provided comfort and care for people in need. In 1949 the Almshouse or McDonough County Farm was turned into a nursing home, and given the name The Elms Nursing Home.  By 1950, as the nursing home needs grew the facility was moved to the former TB Sanatorium in Bushnell.  In 1973 the facility had deteriorated beyond reasonable repair.  Our current facility opened on October 9, 1977 and is currently called The Elms.

Blanche Martin Estate

Blanche Martin, a long time McDonough County resident, bequeathed the annual earnings of her 120 acre farm to McDonough County.  She specified that earnings be used to help keep the costs down for residents of the McDonough County Nursing Home.

Over the years, The Elms has been able to use this memorial to purchase many items that have and continue to improve the quality of life for the many county residents that we have served.
